A life for strabismology
Alfred Bielschowsky worldwide still plays an important roll in ophthalmology and strabismology. Born in Namslau, Bielschowsky began his medical studies in nearby Wroclaw (formerly Breslau) and soon switched to Heidelberg and then Berlin. In 1912 he was appointed in Marburg, where he founded the Institute for Study for the Blind, and in 1921 in Wroclaw. The political changes after 1933 and the start of the persecution of the Jews in Germany forced Bielschowsky to continue his scientific career in the USA. Dr, Angelika Kaufmann describes in this authoritative biography the remarkable career of one od the great personalities in ophthalmology. |
