Papers presented to the Fourth British-Dutch Maritime History Conference
The volume starts with four papers on the navies of both countries in the 20th century. The first couple is devoted to their role in the period 1918-39.The second pair adresses the Cold War period. A defensive strategy and response were the only options for the mercantil marines and the shipbuilding industries of Britain and the Netherlands after the Second World War. In particular the undermining of Britain s position as the former leading shipbuilder and shipowner of the world was a continuous process. Strategy and response are clearly visible in the development of ports. Rotterdam and the British ports in general are discussed. |
